A hobbit-hole in my backyard? It may sound crazy, but I can tell you that my kids love it. It is the coolest playhouse ever. Plus, they can enjoy the grassy hill for sledding in winter and water sliding in summer. This was all my wife's idea. She dreamt it, and I got to be the one to bring it to reality. I'm not a construction expert; this was a total do-it-yourself job by a complete amateur. It has turned out rather nicely, I think. Here is the story of how it came to be.

What a wonderful project for you and your family! did you ever get the inside completed?

Just found your site today. Was looking for Hobbit home ideas in backyards. Love what you've done. Already told my husband that when we have a big enough yard, that we are building a hobbit home. Just wanted to say that I love what you've shared and that your kids love what you've built. Really cool. Have you finished the inside yet?

I tried sending you a facebook message from a link in one of your other blogs, but I am told that it would have gone to an "other" folder so you wouldn't see it. I am in Utah and trying to find someone who will sell me a pipe for this same purpose. Can you tell me who you bought your pipe from?

Hi Allie, it is still a work in progress. New job and teenagers halted progress for a while. Looking to get back at it this summer.

Hi tyfoff,

I'm afraid the person I bought it from only had one. It was essentially scrap (in very good shape) from his yard. He does not have more. I'm sorry about that!

Joe,

Thanks for the reply. You mentioned in one of your earlier posts that you were looking to buy some pipe for around $1500. Did you have a specific place that you were looking at to buy it?

Hey I was looking at doing a project like this in my own backyard. Do you have a rough estimate of the total cost?

Too bad The Hobbit movies were such a disappointment. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was amazing, but they took too many liberties and indulged in too much bad CGI for The Hobbit trilogy.

Seth, the most expensive part of this is potentially the pipe, which can cost a couple thousand dollars. We got lucky and new a guy who had one as scrap in his yard, which he sold to us for several hundred, delivered. Since this was a trial and error job by someone with very limited experience in construction, there was a fair amount of waste. If I had to do it all over again with what I know now, and do it once right, while taking advantage of things like construction thrift stores (e.g. Habitat for Humanity ReStore), I could probably do it for around $1500, plus the pipe. But to be honest, I built this little by little over several years, so I don't have a tally of the cost.
